Love your reference to Schoene in connection with Musil. I was of course unfamiliar with the article you cite, but I drew on him for a piece on Goethe's Leipzig letters to Behrisch, which Schoene wrote an exhaustive treatment of.

Wonderful to hear. I loved his essay on Musil, which I read while eating lunch in the old Grad Center Cafeteria (9th floor was it) one day. It has stuck with me ever since. I read a little in your Goethe blog, by the way, about Gellert, and I love what you are doing there. I so relate to the desire to trace all of the people whose names are mentioned over and over. It can be incredibly enriching to finally get to them. Maybe that could be an interesting way of writing a biography: sketches of peripheral people in our subjects’ lives.
